Martin (DICE) has jointly created resources to promote the work of the Champion for disabled children and young people – Birmingham.
Martin has also worked with the Champion to facilitate and deliver consultation sessions with disabled children and young people around Short Breaks, and the inclusion of disabled children and young people views in the strategic plans for Birmingham Local Authority.
The quality of work supplied by Martin is of a consistent and high quality. Martin works in partnership to ensure that all key objectives and outcomes of the work is achieved in a timely fashion. This set of courses enable effective and responsive practice with disabled children and young people. The courses share best practice and promote a space for reflection and enable the development of meaningfull skills and knowedge through listening and responding to people with SLD, PMLD and Autism, Communicating without Words, Makaton, Moving and Handling, Empowering Communication with ICT, Supporting and Enabling Independence (Personal Care), Participation, Consultation and Engagement and Postive Behaviour Management.
 
 

Listening and Responding to children and young people with Autism

Listening and Responding to People with Autism

This innovative course supports participants to explore methods of engaging and supporting the voice of people who we may find difficult to understand or who present challenges to services.
Objectives:
  1.  Understand the nature of Autism from a medical and social model perspective
  2.  Support participants to identify issues, barriers and challenges in working with people with Autism
  3.  Develop skills and strategies in understanding and working creatively with people with Autism
  4.  Develop skills and strategies in building a communicative relationship with people with Autism
  5.  Equip participants with skills and strategies to enable and assess progress/ participation
  6.  Support participants to enable a culture of empowerment and action - plan steps for further learning

Listening and Responding to People with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities

Communicating without Words

Communicating with People Who Do Not Use Words to Communicate
       
This course supports participants to understand issues of communication in working with people who do not communicate using words. The course enables participants to develop effective communication strategies and to embed them within the setting
Objectives:
  1.  To understand and explore communication difficulties
  2.  To support participants to understand the barriers to communication and the effect communication has on people with learning disabilities lives
  3.  To understand and respond to communication needs of people with learning disabilities
  4.  To develop communication systems and accessible information

Using Makaton

This responsive course provides learners with the opportunity to learn and develop skills in using makaton sign with people who have learning disabilities.

Objectives

• Understand the principles of using makaton with people who have learning disabilities

• Develop skills in using makaton sign to communicate

• Learn core and extensive makaton sign vocabulary


Empowering Communication with ICT

This course supports practitioners to develop skills in using computer technology to develop communication aids and accessible information.

Objectives:

• Understand the ways you can use computer technology to develop communication aids and accessible information

• Develop skills in using packages such as change picture bank,photo bank and communicate in print

• Develop skills in using computer technology to produce communication aids and accessible information


Supporting and Enabling Independence (Personal Care)

This practical course supports participants to build and foster development skills in enabling independence with children and young people with learning disabilities. This course is tailored to theservice provision and people it works with.

Objectives:

• Understand benefits and challenges to independence and interdependence that people with learning disabilities experience

• Understand the principles of supporting independence and your role

• Develop skills in supporting independence

• Develop skills in informally teaching independence skills


Participation Consultation and Engagement

This course supports participants to engage and consult disabled children and young people with severe, profound and complex disabilities so that they can participate in decisions about their lives and the services that they use. Crammed full with practical ideas and tips, this course enables participants lead activities that enable disabledchildren and young people to participate in creative, meaningful, responsive and fun activities.

Objectives:

•Understand the importance of and benefits to involving disabled children and young people in consultation/participatory projects

• Examine how to involve disabled children and young people with communicationimpairments and severe profound learning disabilities

• Explore and create methods of involving disabled children and young peopleespecially with severe, profound and complex disabilities

• Explore a range of creative activities ideal for working with children and young people who have Complex needs

• Enable you to differentiate activities in order to include children and young people who are operating at different levels, identify strategies and ‘ways of working’ with disabled children who have severe, profound and complex learning disabilities


Positive Behaviour Management with Disabled Children and Young People

This course will support participants to promote a style of engaging with children that supports positive behaviour with disabled children and young people who have behaviour that challenges

Objectives:

• Identify what type of behaviour the participants find challenging

• Examine the causes of challenging behaviour

• Develop strategies for limiting the need for children to expressthemselves from behaving in a challenging way

• Methods of promoting and supporting positive behaviour
