Training and Assessment:

Today I have learnt

‘..alot of really good methods and  a new approach towards the children’
‘how to communicate better with disabled children’

Today I thought the trainer was

‘clear and gave me good information’
‘Brilliant ...he has given useful information for communicating and working with disabled children more effectively...he was clear and informative’

Martin (DICE) has jointly created resources to promote the work of the Champion for disabled children and young people – Birmingham.
Martin has also worked with the Champion to facilitate and deliver consultation sessions with disabled children and young people around Short Breaks, and the inclusion of disabled children and young people views in the strategic plans for Birmingham Local Authority.
The quality of work supplied by Martin is of a consistent and high quality. Martin works in partnership to ensure that all key objectives and outcomes of the work is achieved in a timely fashion. We intend to offer ideas that families can re-create at home with little or no expense through the use of play props that they are likely to have already, natural materials or easily available cheap supermarket items. We will show families how to use a child centred approach and to follow the children’s interests in developing play and activities; we are also able to support the development of themes should this arise e.g jungle, seaside.

We are able to adapt the activities to cater for intellectual, physical, sensory, communication and behavioural needs. We are creative facilitators and through using accessible approaches we enable the participation of children with a range of diverse needs and experiences including those described as ‘hard to reach’ e.g people with autism, severe learning disability and profound and multiple learning disabilities.

We are able to use multi sensory methods that promote active choice and decision making and participation. We promote childcentred approaches based on the observation of the child’s interests.

We support families to experience shared understanding through opportunities that support esteem, learning and play and promote bonding. We will support all of the family including parents and non disabled siblings to engage and share experiences with each other. While we willoffer a variety of fun experiences the underlying theme will be to foster the families’ confidence and creativity in being together.

The structure of the activities will be twofold; to facilitate an activity that creates a shared play based learning experience, and through involving the families in the development of the theme, to support them to sustain and develop their creative play after the event.
