Martin (DICE) has jointly created resources to promote the work of the Champion for disabled children and young people – Birmingham.
Martin has also worked with the Champion to facilitate and deliver consultation sessions with disabled children and young people around Short Breaks, and the inclusion of disabled children and young people views in the strategic plans for Birmingham Local Authority.
The quality of work supplied by Martin is of a consistent and high quality. Martin works in partnership to ensure that all key objectives and outcomes of the work is achieved in a timely fashion. This set of courses are designed to support workers to promote and achieve effective and responsive advocacy and self determination with disabled children and young people. The courses support best practice in enabling advocacy and the self-determination of disabled children and young people through developing skills in Advocacy, Person Centred Planning and using ICT to support and enable self exploration.
 
 

Empowering Self Exploration with ICT

This course supports you to empower people with learning disabilities, by using computer technology to create multi‐media documents that support them to express who they are and what is important to them.
 
Objectives

• Understand the possibilities of using Computer Technology to create empowering documents

• Develop skills and confidence in using computer technology such as power point, film, photography, esound and others to create empowering documents that can be utilised as tools to communicate

Person Centred Planning Styles
Person centred planning uses a number of individualised planning approaches that aim to put people in control of their lives. The use of powerful tools such as essential lifestyle planning, solution circles, PATH and MAP can be used to support people to reach their goals and create an understanding of the person.
Objectives:
  1.  Explore the benefits, rationale and barriers to person centre planning
  2.  Understand the distinct use of each planning style
  3.  Develop and practise skills in using each person centred planning tool
  4.  Equip practitioners with the confidence and the ability to enable effective facilitation of person centred planning

This course will introduce participants to the values and approaches that support individuals and families to create plans that put the person in the centre of their life. A range of planning styles will equip participants to support individuals, to think through issues and develop plans that put them in control of their lives.

Introduction to Advocacy with Disabled Children and Young People 
This course introduces participants to the importance of and challenges involved in advocacy work with disabled children, young people and adults. The course helps practitioners to engage in advocacy work that supports individuals and groups to take control of their lives
Objectives:
  1.  Explore and understand the values of advocacy
  2.  Understand definitions of advocacy
  3.  Develop an understanding of advocacy models that can be used to support people to achieve their rights and participate in society
  4.  Consider the benefits, barriers and challenges within advocacy
  5.  Equip participants with tools to support them to enable advocacy
  6. Support participants to build empowerment
